The resort of st pierre, located in 400 acres of rolling south wales countryside, is just over the severn bridge. The exquisite 14th-century manor house acts as both an impressive clubhouse and a soothing inn. During the battle of agincourt, the crown jewels were kept in the manor house for safekeeping. The hotel is located next to the st pierre church, which was built during norman times.
The old course, which is set in a mature deer park, first opened for play in 1962 and was designed by c.k. Cotton, with the aid of frank pennink.
Bernhard langer is the first german to win a major tournament here at st pierre in the 1980 british masters. St pierre has hosted the british masters a total of eight times. Five former ryder cup captains – tony jacklin, bernhard gallagher, bernhard langer, seve ballesteros, and ian woosnam – were among the winners at st pierre. In 1982, greg norman used a 3-wood to reach the putting surface on the 362-yard 10th hole on his way to victory, and ian woosnam, better known as "woosie," was st pierre's last masters winner, winning in 1983. In 1996, the solheim cup was contested in st. pierre, and the united states claimed it by a score of 17 to 11 over europe.
A lake spanning more than ten acres poaches several golf balls, and mature sentry trees lie in wait to stymie the errant tee shot. The 7,023-yard par 72 course is not for the faint of heart; proper tee placement will pay off. The 18th hole, a 230-yard par three that is remarkably free of foliage, is without a doubt the old course's most prominent and dramatic hole. It'll take a good tee shot over the lake's side. The elevated tee is an perfect vantage point from which to toast victory... Or to mourn the ball's arrival on dry ground or in a watery grave.
