Pinehurst (No.6)

USA

Donald ross famously designed the first four courses at pinehurst, and thanks to ellis maples, a ross associate, no. 5 didn't fall far from the tree. When the resort employed george fazio and his nephew tom to design the sixth course at america's home of golf in 1975, it represented a major shift in the resort's direction.

The end result was something that reflected both current golf architecture patterns and the distinctive look of the carolina sand hills. The course needed more space from the tee to closer fairways, as well as a higher number of water hazards than the other pinehurst entries. Consider the par five, which is just 500 yards long and can be completed with two strokes. Tigers must remember that the fairway narrows to a circle between two ponds and adjust their drives accordingly.

Tom fazio returned 40 years later to relax the angles of his first greens and, in the end, create faster putting surfaces. He also supervised the development of wiregrass around the resort as part of the resort's overall transformation to a more natural look.

Pinehurst may have admired the fazios' work at no. 6 because they asked tom and return to plan the no. 8 course.
