Monterey Peninsula (Dunes)

USA

The dunes golf course at monterey peninsula country club is a 1926 seth raynor design that was built with mackenzie's aid by alister mackenzie's partner, robert hunter. Mpcc's gem, remodeled by rees jones in 1999 and redesigned by fazio design in 2016, now presents a somewhat different challenge than seth raynor had in mind. The fairways of the dunes course are sympathetically routed through forest, across sand hills, and then along the californian coastline, according to the club.

The dunes course's par threes are as good a set of short holes as you'll ever see on a golf course. The fourth, the 233-yard 4th, plays downhill to a âĢľbiarritzâĢĿ green of sand on the right and left flanks. The 189-yard 7th also necessitates precise tee-to-green play to a plateau green that falls apart on all sides.

The 170-yard 10th hole, which kicks off the back nine, takes golfers downhill to a sand-fortified, elevated green at the ocean's edge. The 176-yard 14th hole, where rees jones audaciously repositioned the green out on the rocks alongside the pacific, is the crowning glory of the dunes course.

The dunes, which had once been overshadowed by mike stranz's redesigned shore course, is now on par with, if not better than, its younger sibling, thanks to tom fazio and his former jackson kahn design Associates' excellent 2017 remodel work, which included installing new sand dunes, waste areas, and bunkers, as well as clearing trees to free up the views.
